Who is Luis?
I have known since I was a child that I wanted to pursue medicinal science, but my exact path wasn’t clear. I was torn between pursuing biochemistry and biophysics, but Illinois Tech provided a path for both—with a great location and a hands-on-driven education. My experience here has been everything I could have hoped for. I’ve gotten to take part in rewarding research, to lead an IPRO team participating in a global synthetic biology competition, and to build a path toward a career as a pharmacologist.
That’s Interesting
I've gotten to do quite a bit of research. I work with Robert E. Frey Jr. Endowed Chair in Chemistry David Minh, who’s a computational biochemist. I was working on a machine-learning model that would make predictions for what effect a drug would have when given to the kappa opioid receptor. This work really paves the way for better drug design in the future. And it showed me that I really do want to become a pharmacologist.
